Two individuals and a community organization will be honored Thursday at the annual Evening of Excellence, presented by the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine Alumni Association. The black-tie dinner will be at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, starting with a cocktail reception at 6:30 p.m.
Dr. Russell Postier will receive the distinguished medical service award, and Michael Samis will be recognized with the distinguished community service award. The distinguished Oklahoma institution award will be presented to the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber.
Postier is chairman of the department of surgery, holder of the Dr. John A. Schilling chair in surgery and widely known for his surgical expertise in gastrointestinal surgery, especially in the areas of the biliary tract, pancreas and colon. His research began with a seed grant funded by proceeds from the first Evening of Excellence in 1985. He is immediate past chairman of the American Board of Surgery. The Vinita native completed his undergraduate education at Oklahoma State University and graduated from the OU College of Medicine in the Class of 1975.
Longtime chairman of the University Hospitals Authority and Trust, Samis is credited with helping create an environment resulting in more than a $175 million investment on the OU Health Sciences Center campus. Under his leadership, the trust has financed construction of the OU Physicians Building and parking structure for the faculty's adult medical practice and provided $18.6 million of the funding for Phase Two of the Stanton L. Young Biomedical Research Center.
A private investor with interests in real estate, oil and gas, manufacturing and health care, Samis is chair of Energy Financial Solutions LLC, and former president, chief executive and chairman of Macklanburg-Duncan Co. He chairs its successor company, M-D Building Products Inc. He graduated from OU and received his master's degree in business administration from Southern Methodist University.
Since 1889, the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber has been a driving force behind the growth of the Oklahoma City area. The chamber promotes the biomedical sciences internationally through the Oklahoma BIO Pavilion and activities at the annual international conference of the Biotechnology Industry Organization, or BIO.
