ProCure Proton Therapy Center opens to treat cancer patientsPublished: Tuesday, September 15, 2009 7:00 am
Cancer patients have a new option for treatment. Monday, the Integris Cancer Institute of Oklahoma ProCure Proton Therapy Center opened for patients. The new center places Oklahoma City among only six locations in the nation to offer proton therapy for cancer treatment.
According to the National Association for Proton Therapy, proton therapy works much like traditional radiation therapy, but the power of protons is that higher doses can be used to control and manage cancer while significantly reducing damage to healthy tissue and vital organs.
The center offers many benefits to patients including:
- Multidisciplinary cancer care delivering a team approach to provide customized treatment plans for patients.
- Multifaceted approach to responding to patient needs through counseling, nutrition changes, support groups, prayer/meditation, exercise and other therapeutic and wellness activities.
- A focused, forward-thinking collaborative team of affiliated organizations to address improvement and new opportunities.
In addition to featuring proton or traditional radiation therapy, the new facility houses four radiation therapy accelerators, providing the latest in image-guided respiratory gating and intensity-modulated radiation therapy.
It also has two high-dose-rate brachytherapy suites, where radioactive seeds are placed within the body; a full set of clinical laboratory services; pathology services; and 18 infusion suites, where chemotherapy and immunotherapy is delivered to patients.
