OKC tops WalletHub's list for best places to start a businessPublished: Friday, June 2, 2017 5:00 am By: Jack Money Source: The Oklahoman
If you live in Oklahoma City and are thinking about starting a business, you're in the right place at the right time, a study suggests.
WalletHub, a website that offers its users free credit scores, free credit reports and credit improvement services, has released a list of the 10 cities it says are the best place for starting a business.
Oklahoma City tops the list for 2017.
Scott Meacham, president and CEO of the nonprofit i2E Inc., isn't surprised by the ranking.
Meacham said Thursday that Oklahoma City consistently has been ranked among the best places to start a business for the past four or five years, noting those rankings have come from various companies and organizations.
“So, they are like validations of where we are as a city and the progress we've made.”
Meacham said he believes there is a mixture of reasons behind making Oklahoma City a good place to start a business.
Affordability, he said, plays a big part in making the city attractive, as a potential business owner's expense to rent space, pay energy bills and employment costs is relatively low, especially compared to what it might cost on the East or West Coasts.
Recently, Meacham told the Oklahoma Venture Forum he firmly believes Oklahoma has entered the era of both high-growth entrepreneurs and high growth companies, where both the numbers and diversities of startup companies are growing.
“There was a time when we lost our best and brightest to other cities, but things are different now,” Meacham observed, noting Oklahoma City is getting entrepreneurs from other major cities, such as Boston, Seattle and New York.
