Mick Cornett knew sports could change Oklahoma City's brand he never dreamed it would happen this way

Mick Cornett wanted to raise Oklahoma City's profile when he first became mayor — and he intended to do it through sports.

“I just thought it was the easiest way,” he said. “It was all about creating an identity and a better brand for Oklahoma City.”

A big part of his plan was getting big-time basketball to town, and back in 2004, that meant Division-I basketball. Cornett's pie-in-the-sky idea was to get Oklahoma City University back to the NCAA's top tier.

I suspect we can forgive him for never delivering on that early expectation.

Big-time basketball, after all, did come to Oklahoma City, but it came in the form of the NBA. The Hornets and the Thunder. Chris Paul and Russell Westbrook. Hugo the Hornet and Rumble the Bison.
