Zauaraou Sylla already is using the skills she learned this summer working with a team from Oklahoma City-based Charter Oak Production LLC.

"We're using software that's new to most people, but I used it this summer," Sylla said. "That's helpful to me that I've had the opportunity to use that software to solve a real problem at a real company."

While the experience has provided Sylla with an advantage in class this fall, her time at the Ronnie K. Irani Center for Energy Solutions likely will be beneficial throughout her career, said J. Mike Stice, dean of the University of Oklahoma's Mewbourne College of Earth and Energy.

"Not only are they getting real-life experiences, which is really important, but they also get to do the analysis that leads to prospects," Stice said. "That analysis is what it takes to be an entrepreneur. We're hoping we'll create a bunch of young entrepreneurs out of this program."
