Long-awaited nonstop flights from Oklahoma to New York City go on sale Saturday following Thursday’s announcement that American Airlines will begin the daily service Nov. 2.
The airline planned to launch the nonstop flight starting last June, but the service was delayed due to the pandemic.
In a Facebook post Thursday, Mayor David Holt called the news “another sign that life is returning to normal.”
“This is great news for Oklahoma City,” said Mark Kranenburg, director of airports. “We appreciate American’s commitment to our community.”
Current flights from Will Rogers World Airport offered by American and other airlines stop everywhere from Denver to Atlanta and Houston to Charlotte before arriving in New York City. Some are as long as nine hours.
The new daily nonstop will depart Oklahoma City at 7:30 a.m. and arrive at LaGuardia Airport at 11:50. The return flight will leave LaGuardia at 7 p.m. and land in Oklahoma City at 9:45.
“It’s a straight shot,” said Stacey Hamm, airport public information officer.
“This is a big deal for the airport. New York is a fabulous destination for both leisure and business travelers,” Hamm said. “It shows American Airlines believes in our city.”
Officials said travelers at both ends have requested a nonstop flight for years.
Hamm said officials expect a lot of visitors from the northeast United States because of the new flight and a growing interest in Oklahoma City.
“We are excited to strengthen our network at OKC with new nonstop service to New York’s LaGuardia Airport just in time for the winter holiday season,” said Brian Znotins, American Airlines vice president of network planning. “As more customers return to the skies, we look forward to welcoming more Oklahomans to fly with us and further connecting them with our global network.”
With the addition of LaGuardia, every American Airlines gateway in the U.S. will be served nonstop from Will Rogers World Airport.
The nonstop LaGuardia flight will utilize the Embraer 175 aircraft and offer two classes of service. Ticket costs have not been announced. Flights may be booked through aa.com.
While many people have postponed travel during the pandemic, that is changing.
“Our daily numbers are increasing every single day,” Hamm said. “People are ready to travel.”
