The Northeast Oklahoma City nonprofit incubator (NEOKCR) continues its success in transforming organizations, keeping its momentum for 24 more organizations in 2024.

The visionary leader behind the incubator initiative, Gabrielle Butler, recognized the need to provide black-led nonprofits and those primarily serving northeast Oklahoma City, with essential resources and capacity-building opportunities.

Gabrielle’s husband and partner in this initiative, Stephen Butler,  emphasized the importance of helping these organizations "level up" in a way that is meaningful to them, without imposing a rigid framework. The goal was to support them in reaching their unique goals and potential.

The inaugural cohort went through eight sessions from Mar. 9 through May 11. These comprehensive training sessions delved into the critical areas of nonprofit governance and management (spanning 2 sessions), marketing and branding, fundraising (2 sessions), and finances and accounting. Facilitator-led discussions were the cornerstone of these sessions, fostering an interactive and collaborative learning environment.

As part of their participation, cohort members gained invaluable insights and resources, including memberships to valued organizations such as the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber and the Black Chamber. Moreover, they were granted access to the Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits' Standards for Excellence program, an accredited curriculum providing best practice training. Additionally, the cohort received expert guidance in grant writing as one of the benefits of participating. The program culminated with a group discussion involving local funders, including foundations and corporations, followed by a closing session where participants offered feedback and learned about their newly acquired memberships.

Gabrielle highlights the incubator's remarkable impact, noting immediate transformations in governance, board structures and internal policies among participating organizations. All entities benefit from a year of covered accounting services and strategic planning. The availability of one-on-one mentorship enhances their ability to swiftly adapt to best practices, fostering engagement with key entities in OKC. Many, if not all, organizations secured increased funding directly due to their incubator participation.

Expressing pride, Gabrielle emphasizes, "We were a conduit for them to shine in what they already do," providing essential resources for organizations and nonprofit leaders with decades of impactful work. This initiative offers them a seat at influential tables and a role in crucial conversations impacting the entire Oklahoma community.

"Initiating this effort is a continuation of my wife's dedicated work in improving her hometown," stated Stephen Butler. He expressed appreciation for funders who not only contribute resources but actively engage in shaping a better Oklahoma. According to Butler, this demonstrates their willingness to learn, collaborate and address the historical underrepresentation and underfunding of communities in Oklahoma City.

Speaking on the uniqueness of Oklahoma City in this space, Butler remarked, "The city's commitment to challenging conversations and taking unconventional steps truly sets it apart." He added that the incubator will continue its momentum by welcoming 24 additional organizations in 2024, delivering over $15,000 in benefits per organization. Applications are being accepted to be part of the upcoming Spring cohort.

The success of the incubator is attributed to the generosity of the Inasmuch Foundation, Arnall Family Foundation, Oklahoma City Community Foundation and Flourish OKC, solidifying their pivotal role in fostering innovation and community growth.
