Why the 2028 Summer Olympics in Oklahoma City will be even bigger than you have imagined

Michael Byrnes strides through the door of the lunch spot in The Plaza District. His morning has already been filled with meetings and calls, and his afternoon (and perhaps even his evening) promises more of the same.

So it goes when you’re in charge of Oklahoma City’s Olympic movement.

Team OKC, it is called.

Right now, it’s a team of one.

“I think at some point soon,” Byrnes says, tongue in cheek, “we’ll grow beyond one employee.”

Oklahoma City will step onto the Olympic stage in a little less than three years, hosting canoe slalom and softball during the 2028 Summer Olympics and serving as a two-sport satellite for Los Angeles. Even though we have known this for more than a year, it’s still a little mind-boggling.
